Puppets - Joanne Dennis
Silent - Axel Antas

"I did it my way" is a group exhibition by 10 artists working in sculpture, video, sound and photography.

Axel Antas, Joanne Dennis, Lucille Power, Ellie Rees, Ray White, Robert Grose, Paul Harper, Ida Akesson, Hannah Rickards, Joe Duggan

The work explores identity, the illusions of freedom and intentionality and the physical nature of an artist’s ‘being in the work’ through strange and disquietening images, gestures, objects and activities.

The artist is residually present in the work, but the physical presence is elusive, perceived through traces of imagery, dreamlike and shifting with time. The aesthetic and material nature of individual identity, uniqueness versus anonymity, sexual repression and the limits of freedom imposed by illness, culture and class society are explored in works using representational puppets, outlines drawn in condensated glass, a human voice masquerading as bird song, old trainers replicated, self portraits in estranged and alien scenarios, sketches, interactive and video performances.
